Liturgical Playlists
This is for all the liturgical people out there who want to still believe that they are hip and in touch with popular culture. First, a wake-up call – using the word “hip” does not make you so. Second, you are into liturgy, the liturgical calendar, and such, so you should give up that dream. Third, there is no reason for you to have to prove your “coolness” – you love liturgy thus making you as cool as you need to be.
For this episode, Jonathan is joined with Kathryn Ray (Pastor of Discipleship at the North Shore Baptist Church in Chicago) to talk about some wonderful play lists that she has made for various liturgical seasons. The mix of popular music, outright sacred music, and those that straddle in-between offer a wonderful breath of fresh air to each season.
It is easy to lose a sense of sacred time in the rush of our secular demands and responsibilities. We can forget the joy of Christmas, the solemnity of Lent, or the anticipation of Advent when we are pulled back to the mundane by the small things. Music is something that can infuse those moments, offering the subtle hints and reminders of what this time is about.
Kathryn’s play-lists are a gift for any who are looking for the soundtrack of the season:
