A Story... With Pictures!

There are many ways to tell a story, and author, artist, illustrator John Hendrix has offered a compelling version of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his book The Faithful Spy. Jonathan and John talk about his book, about the genre of the graphic novel, and the idea of faith. Jonathan reviewed John’s book on his blog, and you can find more about John and all the projects and things that he has done at his website www.johnhendrix.com

There are a number of books and movies and other forms of medium that tell the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and John Hendrix has decided to add to the multiple volumes telling the story. Yet it is a different medium, the graphic novel, and through that medium Hendrix tells the Bonhoeffer story from a particular vantage point. There is something that can be seen, that adds to the experience via the visual mediums that just words cannot convey. The colors, the lines, the illustrations share experiences and feeling that pull at the reader in a way that words may not. We should look to the value that can be found in such approaches to telling stories and sharing experiences. What our eyes see in the pictures creates experiences that words may not.
