Punk Faith
Jonathan is joined again by Eric Carlson! Eric is a teacher at Pilgrim High School in Warwick, RI and one of the hosts of the podcast Cut X Cut.
On the last episode with Eric, they talked about spirituality and the band Mountain Goats. But now, it is a bit of a shift to Punk music! Often people consider Punk as something that is counter to institution, to mainstream, and especially to religion. And yet there is something deeply spiritual about the protest. Punk is not about protest for the sake of protesting, but more because something has been lost, something has been skewed from what could have been great. Punk offers a criticism that comes from the heart, that comes from a place of deep love and a pain for something lost. As Christians we have, in many ways, lost our way from what it is that Christ calls us to do and the ways Christ calls us to walk. We need the criticism of Punk!
The bands and songs discussed in the episode are:
“God Save the Queen” - Sex Pistols
“Don’t Pray on Me” and “God Song” - Bad Religion
“Do Not Consider Yourself Free” - Embrace
“Attitude” - Bad Brains
“Jesus was a Communist” - Reagan Youth
